DIY : Succulent Planter

How To Make A Succulent Planter by Home Style Austin
One Excellent Succulent

If you’re looking for a fun and easy way to make a lasting impression, make and gift one of these unique succulent plants.

Once you have the supplies, these “succulent hangers” are surprisingly simple to create. The end result is a one-of-a-kind handmade plant that will surely delight both you and the lucky recipient.

Tips:

  • The material quantities below are approximations; what you use will vary based on the size of your plants and the number of succulent planters you’re making. PS ~ While you’re making one you might as well make more!
  • You may find 4 hands are better than 2! Our friend Eileen lent us her 2 hands which were especially useful during the forming and wrapping stages shown below.
  • Most of the supplies are easy to find; we found plants, soil, sphagnum moss and the garden wire at Lowes, green moss and the rainbow-inspired decorative twine came from Michael’s. The clay soil was the hardest for us to locate but we scored a 40 pound bag of it for about $5 at Hill Country Water Gardens (it’s one of our favorite nurseries). PS ~ 40 pounds of clay soil is deceivingly small.

Materials:

1 – 2 Cups  |  Potting Soil
1 – 2 Cups  |  Clay Soil
About 1/4 cup (To Form)  |  Water
1 (or more)  |  Succulent Plants
Two Handfuls  |  Sphagnum Moss, Moistened
Two Handfuls  |  Green Moss, Unmoistened
10 – 15 Feet  |  Decorative Twine
To Hang  |  A Piece Of Driftwood Or A Found Stick (about 6 inches long)
To Hang  |  Some Green Garden Wire (available at most craft stores)

What To Do:

1. Make Dirt.
In a medium-sized bowl mix together equal parts of the potting and clay soil. Add water and combine until the mixture resembles a pliable dough. Set aside.

2. Form Planter.

Remove your succulent plant from its container and wrap it with enough sphagnum moss to entirely encase the roots. Then wrap the moss-covered succulent with the prepared, wet, soil from Step 1 above, forming a ball. Wrap green moss around the succulent and trim any excess that rises above the edge of the succulent.

How to Make a Succulent Planter Hanger by Home Style Austin
3. Wrap Planter

Using your decorative twine, wrap the planter several times to secure the soil and moss to the plant. A few times I carefully wrapped the twine on top – and between – the succulent branches to help form a well-wrapped “ball.” Along the way test your wrap to ensure the plant hangs level. As we formed the wrapped planter we created 4 extra-long suspensions at each “corner” of the succulent planter and then wrapped the hanging stick (below) to help keep the plant stable in the breezy winds of Central Texas. Make sure and leave enough excess twine at the top of the plant for hanging.

4. Prepare To Hang

Wrap the excess twine around your hanging stick (from Step 3) to your desired length and tie them off at the top of the stick or tie and tuck the twine along the bottom of your succulent planter. To suspend from a nail or hanger wrap the stick a few times with the garden wire and secure.

5. To Care & Feed
Hang your succulent in a semi-sunny place, indoors or out. Make sure to keep the plant happy and keep it moist by misting daily or by watering liberally or letting rest in a shallow bowl of water. Succulents don’t need to be over-watered but they do need a little love.

Enjoy and please email me with any questions about this project!

Cowboy Bark Recipe

A Cowboy Bark Recipe From Home Style Austin

Chocolate Lover?

If you’re a fan of Trader Joe’s Cowboy Bark like I am, you’ll likely love this recipe. Who doesn’t want to take their taste buds on a flavor adventure with dark chocolate, nuts, heath bars and a hint of sea salt?

This recipe just has 7 ingredients – I refer to them as the “Magnificent 7” and after the chocolate is nice and gooey the kids can help decorate these treats … fun for the whole family!

Cowboy Bark is great for gift-giving! I make it for friends and clients … and soon my parents (if they find this post).

Foodie Tips:

  • The chocolate mix is the most important part of this recipe and you can customize it to your personal taste; you can use 100% of the same dark chocolate or a mixture of your own liking. I used a 12 ounce bag of Hershey’s Special Dark Mildly Sweet Chocolate Chips, 4 ounces of Nestle Toll House Milk Chocolate Morsels and a Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate Bar that the folks at TJ gave us just for checking-in on Foursquare. Sweet!
  • You can top your bark with a few of your own special ingredients – we like dried cranberries, pistachios, cashews and of course Texas pecans, the Mother of all nuts.

Ingredients:

18-20 ounces  |  Chocolate, Melted Warm (see foodie tip above)
1 Cup  |  Mini Pretzels, Broken Into Pieces (Rold Gold or Synder’s work well)
¼ Cup |  Lightly Salted Peanuts, Coarsely Chopped
¼ Cup | Lightly Salted Almonds, Coarsely Chopped
¼ Cup |  Heath Bars, Coarsely Chopped
8-10  |  Chocolate Oreo Cookies, Cut Into Bite-Size Pieces
A Sprinkling |  Gray Sea Salt, To Taste

Cowboy Bark Recipe

Directions:

1. Line a 10″ x 15″ baking tray with a piece of parchment paper and set aside.

2. Ready all of the ingredients above – except the chocolate – so that once the chocolate is melted you can move swift, like the wind.

3. Place your chocolate mixture into a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 15-30 second increments, stirring with a rubber spatula between cycles, until the chocolate is smooth. Do not boil!

4. Pour your chocolate mixture onto your readied baking tray and spread the chocolate evenly with a wooden spoon or large knife. You don’t need to spread to the corners; just keep the chocolate in one continuous “blob.” Perfection isn’t a requirement here.

5. Sprinkle your ingredients on top of the chocolate and top with a sprinkling of sea salt. Lightly press your toppings into the chocolate to ensure a friendly bonding.

6. Transfer your readied tray into your fridge for 30-60 minutes, until everything has “set.” With a blunt knife press into the chocolate – it should break into delightful chunks.

Yields: 20 or more servings, depending on the size of your bark cuttings.

Hatch-Chicken Mac n’ Cheese Recipe

A Hatch Chicken Mac n' Cheese Recipe by Home Style Austin
A Smokey Love Affair

This time of year when the Hatch Chili Peppers make their bountiful cameo appearance, we get weak in the knees for all things hatch. Just perusing almost 100 recipes at Central Market’s website made us break an indoor sweat for this sensationally, seasonal pepper.

With hatches in hand we decided to incorporate these delightfully, smokey-tasting peppers into our interpretation of gourmet Mac n’ Cheese. This dish will take more time than it does to whip-up Mac from a box, but we think the results undoubtedly justify the labor of love.

Hatch Chili Peppers from Home Style Austin

Foodie Tips:

  • We prepare our hatch chili peppers and our chicken ahead of time so assembly time will be efficient; we have Mac n’ Cheese to eat! The roasted rotisserie chicken? We scored ours ready-to-go from our local HEB mere steps from an impressive Hatch Chili Pepper display.
  • Not sure how to roast your Hatch Chili Peppers? Here’s a helpful post I found that may help. We roasted our peppers on the outdoor grill. Our local HEB Plus! was even hosting hatch chili roasting events to make things even easier.
  • As an alternative to olive oil we have been having fun with avocado oil; it has a high smoke point and can offer various health benefits. We found our oil locally at Salt & Time on East 7th Street.
  • You can substitute the cheeses below with your favorites, like with Monterrey Jack or Mozzarella.
  • If it’s not hatch season you can use a couple cans of green chiles, although the flavor won’t be as smokey. If you’re out of shallots, try substituting red or white onions. No penne? Try elbow macaroni or your favorite sauce-hugging pasta (sorry, spaghetti, linguini and angel hair – we have other plans in store for you).

Ingredients:

2  |  Shallots, Peeled, Roasted and Chopped
3 Cloves  |  Garlic, Peeled, Roasted and Chopped
2 Teaspoons  |  Avocado Oil (or olive oil)
2 Tablespoons  |  Flour
4 Cups  |  Heavy Whipping Cream
1 Teaspoon  |  Fresh Thyme, Chopped
2 Cups  |  Jalapeño Pepper Jack Cheese, Shredded
2 Cups  |  Cheddar Cheese, Shredded
To Taste  |  Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper
1 Pound  |  Penne Pasta, Cooked and Drained
4-5  |  Hatch Chili Peppers, Roasted, Skinned, Seeded and Chopped
2-3 Cups  |  Roasted Rotisserie Chicken, Deboned and Shredded
1/2 – 1 Cup  | Panko Bread Crumbs
2 Tablespoons  |  Falfurrias Brand Butter, Melted
2 Tablespoons  |  Italian Flat Leaf Parsley, Chopped

Making Mac n' Cheese with Home Style Austin

Directions:

1. Place the peeled shallots and garlic in a small aluminum foil pouch and drizzle with 1 teaspoon of the oil. Roast on the grill (or indoor oven at 425°F) about 25 minutes, until tender. This is a good time to boil the water, prepare the pasta and set it aside after drining. Remove the shallot-garlic medley from oven/grill and give it some time to cool a bit. Remove the veggies from the foil then chop them up.

2. In a large sauté pan over medium heat, add another teaspoon of oil, the chopped vegetables then sauté for about a minute. Add the flour and stir for 1 minute (do not allow to burn). Whisk in the heavy cream and the thyme then stir in the Hatch Chili Peppers. Allow the mixture to reduce by a third.

3. Add your cheeses and stir until melted, creamy and thick. Season with salt and pepper as desired. Hungry yet? :)

4. Remove the cheese sauce from the heat and gently stir in the pasta and chicken. [Note: If your sauté pan is too small you can transfer the sauce into the pasta pot.] Transfer the Mac n’ Cheese into a 9″ x 13″ casserole dish and set aside. Preheat your oven to 350°F.

5. In a small bowl mix together the panko, butter and parsley; spread this mixture over the Mac n’ Cheese. Bake uncovered for about 25-35 minutes, until everything is browned and bubbly. Remove from oven, cool for a few minutes then serve.

How To Challenge Your Property Taxes

Austin Then ~
An old photo from Home Style Austin archives taken from the top of  UT’s Tower shortly after it was completed in 1937.

Greetings From Austin Circa 1937 © Home Style Austin

Austin Now ~ From home to drone – a pretty aerial view of the dramatic change in Austin’s skyline in about 80 years, visually speaking to Austin’s amazing growth.

Boomtown, Texas

It should come as no surprise that the Austin area housing market is on fire with supply sorely struggling to keep up with demand. With 110-150 new people moving to the region per day – an average of over 40,000 people each year – in 2 years the Austin metro area is projected to top 2 million strong.

With the recent KVUE.com news release that Travis County property appraisals increased 15%, I’ve been fielding questions from my clients with concerns about rising taxes and what it means to their bottom line.

While most folks want their homes to appreciate in value, this can also impact their property taxes. Many area home owners are confronting sticker shock with recent property appraisal increases that can easily equate to thousands of dollars. Williamson County residents – your appraisal assessment has risen an average of 10%.

A Challenging Question

Did you know it’s your right to protest your property taxes?

Before you challenge your county, do your due diligence and double check the tax appraiser’s assessment. Check the facts and details about your home such as size, age and condition. Compare it to other homes in your neighborhood to determine its value position on the scale with others. One way you can do this is to research online appraisal information for homes around you. Tax appraisals are made available online – Travis County residents can find theirs here and Williamson County residents here.

Another way to “save” on your expenses is to make sure you’ve filed your homestead exemption, which is a big component of tax savings! If you’ve filed a Homestead exemption, the appraisal district can not increase your assessed or taxable value more than 10% of the taxable value from the prior year.

While I read the deadline for filing property tax protests in Williamson County is June 1st (online forms are here) and in Travis County it’s June 2nd (online forms are here) I noticed the county websites suggest having your protest form postmarked by May 31st.

I hope this information is helpful!

DIY : Cascarones

DIY Cascarones From Home Style Austin

Party On

Never underestimate the power of creativity!

This DIY project is for how to make your very own “cascarones,” or confetti eggs. Cascarones are eggs that are emptied, filled with colorful confetti (or small objects) then commonly cracked on an unsuspecting person’s head in celebration of many things both big and small. Learn more on wiki here.

My family typically made our cascarones by hand-dying the eggs usually around the Easter holiday. This year, let’s look at this no-dye version.

Let’s get crackin’

Tips:

  • This DIY recipe is for making cascarones with tissue paper and glue. You can also color-dye your eggs with many of the kits found in local Austin stores.
  • The more eggs you make, the more fun you can have! You can make/save the egg shells in advance so you’re not hoarding 12 or more eggs all at once – your choice.
  • You can buy your confetti or make your own from shredded papers. The best deal on confetti we found was $1/bag at HEB (shown below). For about 75 cents more, you can buy a dozen eggs already pre-made by the fine folks at HEB, but your inner artist may be left unfulfilled.  :/
  • Cascarones make great handmade gifts!

The Materials For Making Your Own Cascarones By Home Style Austin
Materials:

12 (or more)  |  Eggs (brown or white)
1  |  Glue Stick
1 Bag  |  Confetti (or other special surprises – see below)
A Few Sheets  | Your Favorite Tissue Paper
A Few  |  Rambunctious Kids, Or Kids At Heart

What To Do:

1. Prepare the eggs. Carefully crack the large end of the egg with a spoon or tool of your choice. Crack the hole about 1″ in diameter (big enough to get objects inside the egg) and be sure to avoid getting pieces of shell in the egg. Don’t throw the whites and yolk out! Empty the egg into a container – you can use the yolks and whites to make omelets or our popular Egg In A Cup recipe. Rinse the inside of the egg under running tap water and turn the egg with the hole facing down to drain; set the egg upside down on a paper towel to further drain and dry. Continue until you’re all done with the number of egg shells that you want to make (we suggest at least a dozen).

2. Decorate your eggs. Using your glue stick, apply glue all around the outside of the egg. Your hands may get sticky, so you can do this in phases. Apply torn sheets of tissue paper to the eggs and lightly press the tissue to the egg – layering will create interesting patterns. See the pic above as a guide.Cascarones Confetti By Home Style Austin

3. Fill the eggs with goodies. It’s most common to use confetti to fill the eggs but you can let your inner creative go wild by filling the cascarones with small toys, your very own homemade fortunes, wedding rings or objets d’art. You don’t need to cram the egg full of goodies, but it’s best to fill them about ¾ full.

4. Wrap it up. Line the outer edge of the egg’s hole with more glue and apply a final piece of tissue to keep the surprises inside.

5. Have an “EGGcellent” adventure! At your next party or “just because,” sneak-up on your unsuspecting “victim.” Crack the egg in your hand then let the inside goodies cascade all over them – or smash the egg directly on their head, if the egg’s loot is safe and soft.

Aren’t surprises great?

SXSWern Soup Recipe

SXSWern Soup Recipe From Home Style Austin

A Texas Trifecta

Since Austin is home to one of the largest conferences in the world, we pay tribute to SXSW with our favorite Southwestern-inspired soup.

Great Things Come In 3s

Interactive, Film and Music are to SXSW as food, design and landscape are to Home Style Austin. This recipe? Turkey gets spiced up with its 3 tastiest BFFs: Black beans, corn and roasted red pepper. The end result? It’ll have your tummy doin’ the Texas 2-step, er, 3-step!

Foodie Tips:

  • Roast your red pepper on the grill or gas stove top by placing the pepper directly on grill or stovetop over medium-high heat. As the skin turns black, turn the pepper and continue blackening on all sides until the pepper is done. Place the pepper in a paper bag or Ziploc bag or bowl covered with cling wrap and let it steam for 15 minutes. Peel the skin off and discard, remove the seeds, then dice the pepper.
  • If you want to enjoy this recipe on the SXSWern fast track, you can substitute the fresh corn, roasted pepper and black beans with 1-2 bags of Bird’s Eye frozen Southwest Blend Veggies. I like the roasted fresh track because of the smoky pepper flavor.

Ingredients:

Dash  |  Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Pound  | Lean Ground Turkey
1  |  Roasted Red Pepper, Diced
1 Cup  | Frozen  Corn
1 Can (15 Ounces)  |  Ranch Style Black Beans
1 Can (15 Ounces)  |  Hunt’s® Tomato Sauce-No Salt Added
2 Cups  |  Low Sodium Chicken Broth
1 Can (10 Ounces)  | Original Flavor RO*TEL Diced Tomatoes and Green Chilies (undrained)
½ Teaspoon  |  Taco Seasoning Mix
To Garnish  |  A Squeeze Of Lime
To Garnish  |  Fritos Corn Chips Want In On The Party

Directions:

1. If you’re preparing this recipe with fresh roasted peppers, prepare the red pepper (directions above). While the roasted pepper is resting…

2. Lightly pour some olive oil into the bottom of a large saucepan and warm the oil.

3. Add the turkey and cook about 5 minutes stirring occasionally until crumbled and no longer pink.

4. Add the roasted diced pepper and corn to the turkey; cook and stir 3-5 minutes until tender.

5. Add the next 5 ingredients and simmer 10 minutes.

Garnish and serve warm. Enjoy!
